Chief, General Obstetrics and Gynecology
The Section of General Obstetrics & Gynecology treats the full spectrum of gynecologic conditions, including menopausal symptoms, pelvic pain, fibroids, incontinence, abnormal uterine bleeding, abnormal PAP smears, vulvar abnormalities, all forms of vaginal infections, and menstrual complaints. We also have significant expertise in the detection and evaluation of polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS, formerly known as PCOS) and ovarian masses. Section members perform both open and minimally invasive surgery in our outpatient facilities at DCAM and the Center for Care and Discovery in Hyde Park. Dr. Iris Romero leads a Cancer Risk & Prevention Clinic for the evaluation of patients with cancer and their relatives, arriving at comprehensive and individualized plans for managing risk. In 2021, we launched the Transgender Clinic for Affirmation and Reproductive Equity (CARE) led by Drs. Iris Romero and Andrew Fisher.
Our practice has a strong focus on pregnancy, emphasizing collaborative decision-making, so that patients and their families can have control of their childbirth experience. We start with preconception counseling, follow our patients throughout pregnancy, and then help them deliver at the Family Birth Center.
The Section of General Obstetrics and Gynecology, ranked #17 in the nation for Obstetrics and Gynecology by U.S. News & World Report, provides coverage to the Labor and Delivery Unit, ensuring that two attending providers are on the unit 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additionally, Dr. Andrew Fisher provides surgical expertise in the Transabdominal Cerclage Program (TAC) to help prevent pregnancy loss.
Our faculty see patients at many of our locations throughout the Chicagoland area, including DCAM (Hyde Park), South Loop, River East, Orland Park, Hinsdale, Dearborn Station, and Ingalls Memorial Hospital.
We are proud to collaborate with our midwives to provide expert care that can include alternative childbirth options. All of our midwives have advanced degrees in midwifery (CNM) and fully partner with our generalist physicians to care for our obstetrical patients at DCAM, Orland Park, Beverly and South Loop. Together, our generalist physicians and midwives support the normal processes of pregnancy and childbirth and emphasize collaborative decision-making. We strive to have low cesarean section rates and encourage vaginal birth after a first cesarean. We also work closely with our lactation consultants to provide comprehensive breastfeeding support.
The Generalist Section is central to the clinical education of residents and students. Our culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient population, which has a broad range of medical conditions and concerns, provides our learners with valuable experience. In addition, our determination to provide equitable, uniformly high-quality, and culturally sensitive care ensures that our trainees will become exceptional clinical obstetricians and gynecologists. Our academic focus is on the education of students, residents, and fellows. On the journey to achieve our mission, our faculty members have built rewarding academic careers with strong local and national reputations.
We strive to be the first choice for Women’s Health for the University of Chicago community and offer exceptional, streamlined, and personalized access to OBGYN care for university and hospital employees and their family members with the UChicago Medicine Friends & Family Program.
The faculty in the Section of General Obstetrics and Gynecology hold several leadership roles: Dr. Scott Moses serves as a member of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics and is the clinical liaison for our midwifery program; Dr. Julia Simon is the Associate Director of the Residency Program; Dr. Abbe Kordik is the System Chief of Obstetrics Quality; Dr. Andrew Fisher is the Medical Director of Labor and Delivery; Dr. Carrie Smith is the Director of the Medical Student Clerkship; Dr. Maryam Siddiqui is the Vice-Chair for Clinical Operations; Dr. Iris Romero is the Dean of Diversity and Inclusion for the Biological Sciences Division; and Dr. Ken Nunes is the Chief Ambulatory Medical Officer for UChicago Medicine.
